Originally from the UK, Anna Betts is a Franco-American written journalist and photojournalist based in Brooklyn, NY. Currently, she is a reporter for The Guardian US. Before joining The Guardian in July of 2024, Anna was a reporter at The New York Times and a member of the 2023-2024 Times Fellowship class. At the New York Times, Anna covered a wide variety of topics, including education, politics, weather events, breaking news events, the criminal indictment of former President Donald Trump and others in Georgia, and the impact of the war in Gaza in the United States.
Before joining the Times, Anna was a reporter at BuzzFeed News in New York, covering everything from politics to social trends. In 2022, Anna received her Master’s in Journalism from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. Anna has freelanced her writing and reporting for The New York Times, The Washington Post, ELLE Magazine, The Verge, The Observer, The Village Voice, and others. In 2022, as a freelancer, Anna worked on a New York Times investigation that examined the partnerships between universities and sports-betting companies, which was named a semi-finalist for the 2023 Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, as well as a SABEW prize.
Before Graduate School, Anna attended New York University from 2016 to 2020, where she majored in Photography at the Tisch School of the Arts and minored in Political Science at NYU College of Arts and Sciences. At NYU, Anna received the Gordon Parks Foundation Scholarship for her senior year.
Some of her photographic work was displayed at the Bronx Museum of the Arts in 2017, and her senior thesis on climate activism was exhibited at the 2020 Photoville Festival in New York. While pursuing her undergraduate degree, Anna also worked at NBC, Marc Jacobs, various art galleries and photo studios, and had her photography work published by ELLE Magazine, i-D magazine/Vice, Teen Vogue, and BuzzFeed News.
